Pros
- •Solid, durable build quality that feels rugged and reliable.
- •Very sensitive receiver with accurate frequency control, delivering clear and positive audio quality.
- •Produces some of the best sound quality both for receiving and transmitting, outperforming many radios tested over decades.
- •Dual band VHF/UHF operation works excellently with clear, reliable signals.
- •Large, easy-to-read display with multiple navigation options for programmed content.
- •Bluetooth add-on enhances usability and convenience.
- •Microphone is well-designed and helpful, with versatile connection options.
- •Programming is straightforward compared to many competitors, especially with the help of laptop software and online tutorials.
- •Detachable head and remote mounting options help with convenient installation and cable management.
- •Performs exceptionally well on repeaters up to 40+ miles away with a suitable antenna, even at moderate power levels.
Cons
- •No mounting hardware included, requiring separate purchase of brackets and adapters which can add 10-20% to the total cost.
- •Faceplate mounting requires two different adapters, including a fragile metal adapter with magnets, which might be fiddly.
- •Fan at the rear is quite loud during operation but effective in cooling.
- •Transmit power feels a bit weak for some users, even though reception is solid.
- •Programming manual is decent but cross-repeating and some features are not well explained, demanding extra effort via videos or forums.
- •External speaker is often needed in larger vehicles because the main unit’s speaker is not loud enough.
- •Antennas like the Diamond model may need tuning due to higher SWR, complicating setup.
- •Warranty claims can be tricky as the manufacturer requires detailed serial number info.
Bottom Line
The Icom IC-2730A is a robust, high-quality dual band mobile radio with excellent audio performance, reliable reception, and relatively easy programming for both beginners and seasoned ham operators. However, be prepared to spend extra on mounting accessories and consider an external speaker for clear audio in bigger vehicles. If you want a tried-and-true radio that balances performance with rugged durability and modern features like Bluetooth, the IC-2730A is a smart choice worth the investment. If you’re looking for a radio with included mounting hardware or less fiddly setup, you might want to compare options elsewhere, but few radios offer this level of quality and reliability at 50W output in this class.
