Pros
- •Delivers good quality black and white prints quickly, with a fast first-page print time around 8 seconds.
- •Includes up to 2 years of original HP toner prefilled, making it convenient and affordable for heavy printing needs.
- •Supports wireless printing and works well with Android devices when the Wi-Fi connection is stable.
- •Can print, scan, and copy without needing a computer, especially through the HP Smart app or native OS tools on Windows and Mac.
- •Compact size fits nicely in small spaces with a sleek, modern design.
- •Easy to install and produce great print quality out of the box when setup goes smoothly.
- •Native driver support enables printing from Windows and Mac without relying on the HP Smart app after initial setup.
- •Scanning functionality, while basic, performs reliably for single-sided scans using the HP Smart app or Windows Scan.
Cons
- •Wireless setup can be difficult and unreliable, especially when using a PC; requires multiple attempts and troubleshooting.
- •Printer cannot connect via LAN without Wi-Fi and becomes completely unusable if Wi-Fi goes down or is unstable.
- •Frequent Wi-Fi disconnections are common, often forcing a frustrating hardwired connection for reliability.
- •Scanner lacks true automatic duplex scanning; users must manually scan and reorder double-sided documents.
- •Print jobs do not queue; each job must complete fully before starting another, slowing down workflow.
- •Paper tray design is flimsy and difficult to reload; the printer also fails to detect when it runs out of paper.
- •Construction quality feels cheap and fragile with very thin plastic parts prone to breakage.
- •Print jobs may cancel unexpectedly with no clear error explanation.
- •Control panel screen is small and awkwardly placed, interfering with scanning thicker documents like books.
- •Software limitations include poor compatibility with certain programs and the need for an HP Smart account and internet access for scanning.
- •Customer support is lacking, with difficulty reaching live reps and ineffective AI or virtual support channels.
- •Official HP website support for serial number recognition and ink refill guidance can be frustrating and unreliable.
- •Reports of early hardware failures, including printhead issues and complete stoppages after a few months of use, are concerning.
- •Users warn about scam calls impersonating official support, so caution is advised when seeking help.
Bottom Line
The HP LaserJet Tank MFP 2604sdw is a compact wireless monochrome all-in-one printer that shines with affordable long-term toner supply and solid print quality out of the box. However, it struggles with flaky Wi-Fi reliability, limited scanning functionality, and questionable build quality, which may lead to frustration over time, especially if you rely heavily on seamless wireless connectivity or duplex scanning. Customer support and software also leave much to be desired, compounding potential headaches. If wireless stability and scanning features are a priority, you might want to consider alternative HP LaserJet models or other brands that offer stronger support and more robust hardware. That said, for users who primarily print simple black and white documents in environments with stable Wi-Fi and don’t mind some setup challenges, this model could be a cost-effective choice.
