- •Comes with Serato DJ Lite, making it accessible for beginners; upgrade to Serato DJ Pro is affordable
- •Smooth crossfader and responsive knobs suited for basic mixing and scratching
- •Supports multiple software options like Serato and Mixxx, providing flexibility in DJing software
- •Achieves very low latency (down to 1ms on MacBook Pro M2), ideal for professional use
- •Built-in sound card offers decent audio output quality for casual and semi-professional setups
- •Easy to use for both beginners and experienced DJs; straightforward interface
- •Multiple features like vinyl mode and adjustable controls for versatility
- •Reliable performance over extended use, with some users experiencing over 40 hours of continuous operation
Cons
- •Feels somewhat plasticy and cheaply built, with buttons and knobs that may lack a premium feel
- •Small size and budget build mean some components, like the mini-USB port, are less durable and prone to failure
- •Limited controls—only supports two decks and fewer knobs compared to larger controllers
- •Requires purchasing a separate Serato DJ Pro license to unlock full features; with Serato Lite, functionality is limited
- •Buttons and knobs are highly sensitive, which can be both a pro and a con depending on user preference
- •No Bluetooth support, so wireless headphones aren’t compatible, and wired connection is necessary
- •Built entirely of plastic, which may cause it to feel less durable
- •Some reviews mentioned that the buttons feel slightly cheap, especially for more advanced scratching
- •The small control surface may be limiting for more complex mixes or performance setups
- •Mini-USB connection can be fragile, requiring caution during transport and usage
Bottom Line
The Hercules DJControl Starlight is a fantastic budget-friendly, compact DJ controller designed primarily for beginners and casual DJs seeking portability and ease of use. Its touch-sensitive jog wheels, low latency, and versatility in software compatibility make it a solid choice for those just starting out or needing a travel-ready setup. However, if you’re after a more rugged build, extensive controls, or professional-grade gear, you might want to consider something like the Pioneer DDJ-200 for better durability and advanced features.
