- •Extremely long detection range provides early alerts for police radar, even over hills and bends.
- •Effectively distinguishes between actual police radar signals and false alerts such as automatic door openers and modern vehicle radar systems.
- •Rear scanner works well if it has a clear line of sight, enhancing 360-degree coverage.
- •High sensitivity mode significantly reduces false alerts, making it easier to identify real threats quickly.
- •Bright, clear OLED display with automatic dimming after signal detection reduces driver distraction.
- •Distinct audible tones help differentiate radar bands once you learn the signals.
- •Laser detection works reliably when police aim at the car’s hood or bumper and the detector is properly mounted low in the windshield center.
- •Easy to hardwire and mount with flexible installation options including a custom on/off switch.
- •Durable and performs consistently across a wide temperature range (0 to 110°F).
- •Does not interfere with other vehicles’ blind spot systems or get detected by radar detector detectors.
Cons
- •Cannot detect police radar if the radar device is turned off, leading some users to feel it “failed” to alert.
- •Fails to detect fixed speed cameras, mobile speed cameras, and average speed camera systems like Tutor, limiting its usefulness in some regions.
- •Laser detection only works under specific conditions—police must be stationary and aim low—which can limit effectiveness.
- •Does not react to lidar signals, which might be critical depending on user needs.
- •Some users find it disappointing and question its value for the price, especially compared to GPS-based warning devices.
- •The device uses a less common 12V power connector and includes a micro USB port whose purpose is unclear.
- •User manual lacks some language options (notably German), which could be inconvenient for some buyers.
- •May give false alerts near railroad crossings or certain radar systems on trucks and hidden speed cameras.
- •Tested mostly in Italy; uncertain how well it performs in other countries with different radar technologies.
Bottom Line
The Cobra RAD 450 radar detector offers long-range and reliable radar detection with good false alert filtering and clear, user-friendly alerts. However, it falls short in detecting fixed or average speed cameras and lidar, which are important for comprehensive coverage in many areas. If you prioritize early warnings from traditional police radar and want a solid device at a reasonable price, this could be a good fit. But if you want broader detection of speed cameras or lidar, or seek GPS-based alerts, you might want to consider exploring other devices designed for those features.
