- •Highly portable and lightweight, easily fitting into a pocket or small purse, perfect for travel and everyday carry.
- •Features a 3-inch 180-degree tilting LCD screen, making selfies and creative angles straightforward.
- •Intuitive and user-friendly interface, suitable for casual photographers and those new to manual controls.
- •Solid build quality that has proven durable under normal use, including surviving accidental drops.
- •Effective optical image stabilization helps reduce blur, especially valuable at long zoom ranges.
- •Produces vibrant colors in both photos and 4K video recordings, enhancing overall image appeal.
- •Continuous shooting ("sport mode") captures action shots well, keeping up with moderate movement.
- •Customer service from Canon and retailers like B&H receives positive feedback for helpfulness and responsiveness.
Cons
- •Image sharpness is disappointing and noticeably softer than older Canon and competing compact models, with details often appearing blurry or smoothed out.
- •Autofocus struggles, especially in low-light conditions and at the maximum zoom, leading to missed shots or slow focus acquisition.
- •Connectivity is frustrating: Bluetooth is complicated to set up and use, while Wi-Fi requires a Canon app and frequently disconnects.
- •The small, flush record button makes it easy to miss starting or stopping video recordings—users wish for a more tactile design.
- •Battery compartment access is inconvenient when using a tripod and problematic in cold weather due to its placement.
- •The plastic lens extender feels fragile and may be vulnerable to damage in windy or rough conditions.
- •Close-up focusing is slow and requires firm shutter button pressure, which can introduce camera shake and reduce sharpness.
- •The shutter button itself requires more force than typical, increasing the risk of blurry photos during slower exposures.
- •Wrist strap length is often too long, needing adjustment for secure and comfortable carrying.
Bottom Line
The Canon PowerShot SX740 HS shines as a versatile, compact travel and casual camera with an outstanding zoom and solid video features like 4K recording. However, if razor-sharp image quality and fast, reliable autofocus are high on your priority list, this model may leave you wanting more, especially compared to older Canon models or competing cameras with larger sensors. Connectivity issues and some ergonomic quirks might frustrate power users but are manageable for casual shooters. For those who cherish portability and convenience over super-crisp images, this remains a strong choice. Otherwise, exploring cameras with larger sensors might be wise for improved detail and focus performance.
