Cons
- •Apple devices with iOS 14.2+ may have connection quirks due to MAC randomization, requiring “Private Address” enabling or tedious MAC filter management.
- •Parental controls have persistent bugs, including scheduling glitches and lack of support for IPv6 filtering, limiting effective device restrictions.
- •Some older devices struggle with WPA3 and WiFi 6 connectivity; workaround involves using guest networks or downgraded security settings.
- •Ethernet 2.5G port setup can confuse users initially, particularly for WAN/LAN mode switching or ISP-specific setups.
- •ASUS’s device registration website is confusing, which can complicate initial setup or firmware updates.
- •The router’s signal, while strong, isn’t a magic bullet and can still struggle to penetrate many dense walls.
- •Managing multiple Apple device MAC addresses for filtering can be tedious and less user friendly.
- •Parental control limitations may require additional external apps for full effectiveness, especially on Apple platforms.
Bottom Line
If you want a powerhouse gaming and streaming router with top-tier WiFi 6 speeds, ultra-stable performance, and plenty of advanced features like a 2.5G port and AiMesh support, the ASUS RT-AX86U is definitely worth serious consideration. It shines brightest in medium to large homes with lots of devices, especially if you’re upgrading from older WiFi 5 routers. However, Apple users with newer iOS versions should be prepared for some setup quirks around MAC filtering and parental controls. If those annoyances might be a dealbreaker, exploring routers with simpler parental controls could be worth it — but for pure speed, range, and reliability, this ASUS is a standout choice.
