Pros
- •Powerful AMD Ryzen™ Z2 A processor with 16GB RAM delivers smooth, responsive gameplay on both cloud and native titles, handling AAA games like RDR2, Apex Legends, and FF14 well at 720p to 1080p.
- •Gorgeous 7” 1080p 120Hz display with FreeSync™ Premium provides crisp visuals and fluid motion, perfect for fast-paced gaming.
- •Comfortable, ergonomic design with Xbox-inspired grips makes extended play sessions easier on the hands.
- •Runs a versatile, customized Windows 11 environment, enabling access to Xbox Game Pass, Steam, Epic Games, and more for a wide gaming library.
- •Premium build quality matched with excellent customization features through ASUS’s Armoury Crate SE software.
- •Decent battery life that typically lasts around 3-4 hours with fast USB-C charging to keep you gaming on the go.
- •Expandable storage options (easily upgradeable with a larger M.2 SSD) provide flexibility to handle larger game libraries.
- •Supports seamless connectivity including stable Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth for keyboards, mice, and other peripherals.
- •Can be docked with third-party setups, allowing play on a TV and transforming the handheld into a desktop-like experience.
- •Responsive controls, including analog sticks, buttons, and D-pad with haptic feedback, contribute to immersive gameplay.
Cons
- •Windows 11 interface, while versatile, can feel a bit clunky or challenging on a handheld touchscreen, especially without a mouse.
- •Some users report occasional touchscreen and on-screen keyboard inconsistencies or frustrations in certain apps and games.
- •Analog stick drift issues have been mentioned, sometimes appearing right out of the box.
- •Battery life can be shorter than ideal under heavy usage, especially during demanding titles or high brightness settings.
- •The model received by some customers did not always match the one ordered, leading to confusion and disappointment.
- •Not recommended to buy used due to performance and hardware consistency concerns (drift, battery degradation).
- •Display can occasionally behave inconsistently, though this is not a widespread complaint.
- •Software performance is good but not flawless; some users feel it could be smoother.
- •Setup and accessory compatibility may require third-party docks and peripherals for full desktop-like use, which adds to the cost.
Bottom Line
The ASUS ROG Xbox Ally Z2 is a powerhouse handheld built for gamers who want a blend of portability, performance, and versatility with a spectacular 7” 120Hz display and deep Xbox integration. It shines for casual to moderately intense gaming sessions, especially if you enjoy a broad game library across multiple platforms. However, the Windows 11 interface and touchscreen can feel a bit fiddly at times, and you might want to keep an eye on analog stick drift or battery life if you’re pushing it hard. If you want a pure, simplified handheld gaming experience with fewer software quirks, you might consider other devices, but for those who value the freedom of Windows plus Xbox Game Pass in a premium form factor, this is a solid pick.
