The Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra delivers substantially improved low-light photography compared to any previous Galaxy phone. If you've ever struggled to capture decent photos at concerts, dimly lit restaurants, or evening events, here's what makes the difference.

Major Hardware Improvements

Brighter main camera: The 200MP sensor now features an f/1.4 aperture—widened from f/1.7 on the S25 Ultra. This captures 47% more light, making a dramatic difference in dim environments.

Improved telephoto: The 5x telephoto camera moved from f/3.4 to f/2.9 aperture, capturing 37% more light. This is particularly meaningful because zoom lenses have traditionally struggled in low light.

Redesigned Night Mode

Samsung rethought how Night mode works on the S26 Ultra:

• No separate mode: Instead of switching to a dedicated Night mode, a moon icon appears automatically when the camera detects low light
• Flexible control: Tap the moon icon to choose Off, Auto, or Max
• Manual exposure: Select specific exposure times (2, 4, or 7 seconds) for creative control

AI-Powered Processing

Samsung's Enhanced Nightography system combines:

• Intelligent noise reduction that preserves detail
• Color preservation for natural-looking images
• Motion detection to minimize blur from hand shake
• AI processing now extended to the front camera for better low-light selfies

Real-World Performance

In testing, the S26 Ultra matches the iPhone 17 Pro Max in low-light photography and beats it for zoomed low-light shots. While Google's Pixel 10 Pro may edge ahead in extreme darkness, the S26 Ultra consistently produces more natural-looking results.

Whether you're capturing candlelit dinners, concert moments, or evening cityscapes, the S26 Ultra delivers some of the best low-light photography available on a smartphone today.
