The Google Pixel 9 carries an IP68 water and dust resistance rating, meaning it can withstand submersion in up to 1.5 meters of fresh water for 30 minutes. However, it is not truly waterproof, and swimming with it is not recommended.
What IP68 Actually Means
The rating provides protection against accidental exposure—drops in puddles, rain, or brief splashes. It is not designed for intentional underwater activities.
Critical Limitations
- Warranty exclusion: Google's warranty does not cover water damage
- Fresh water only: Pool chlorine and salt water can damage internal components
- Degradation over time: Water resistance diminishes as seals wear from normal use
- Physical damage: Scratches and cracks compromise water resistance significantly
Best Practices
Treat your Pixel 9 as water-resistant, not waterproof. The IP68 rating is your safety net for accidents—not a feature to test deliberately. If you need underwater photography or plan to swim with your phone, invest in a dedicated waterproof case rated for those activities.
Bottom Line: Accidental drops in water? You are covered. Intentional swimming? Get a waterproof case instead.
