The MacBook Pro 14-inch M5 supports up to two external displays while the built-in Liquid Retina XDR display remains active—three screens total.
Supported Resolutions
| Configuration | Maximum Resolution | |--------------|-------------------| | Single display | 8K at 60Hz, 5K at 120Hz, or 4K at 240Hz | | Two displays | 6K at 60Hz each, or 4K at 144Hz each |
Connection Ports
- 3× Thunderbolt 4 (USB-C)
- 1× HDMI 2.1 (direct connection, no adapter needed)
Key Limitation
Unlike older Intel MacBooks, closing the lid does NOT increase external display support. The M5 supports two external monitors whether open or closed—this is an Apple silicon constraint.
Comparison by Chip
| Chip | External Displays | Total Screens | |------|------------------|---------------| | M5 | 2 | 3 | | M5 Pro | 3 | 4 | | M5 Max | 4 | 5 |
Need More Than Two Externals?
Two options exist:
- Upgrade to M5 Pro for native three-display support
- Use DisplayLink docks — software-based solution that enables additional displays with some performance overhead
Recommended Monitor Setup
For the cleanest setup, choose USB-C monitors with power delivery like the Apple Studio Display or LG UltraFine 5K. One cable handles both video output and MacBook charging.
