The autofocus on the Sony FE 200-600mm lens is quite impressive, especially for such a big zoom lens. Our research shows that it stays fast and accurate, even in different lighting, which is great news if you're into wildlife photography, sports, or anything where you need to quickly adjust your focus.
From what we've found, it handles tracking fast-moving subjects pretty well. It uses something called a Direct Drive SSM focusing system, which keeps things quiet and precise. This is particularly handy if you're a wildlife photographer who needs to sneak up on animals without scaring them off.
However, in really low-light situations, you might notice a bit of a slowdown. That's not unusual for lenses with this type of aperture. It's more noticeable if you use teleconverters to boost the zoom range to 280-840mm or even 400-1200mm, where the aperture narrows and lets in less light. Under these conditions, the autofocus is still solid but might be a tad slower.
Overall, the autofocus is a standout feature of this lens and most folks find it reliable and quick. It's a flexible option for Sony Alpha cameras, whether you're chasing action shots or capturing things from a distance.
Just keep the minor lag in mind if you're planning to shoot in dim light a lot, especially with teleconverters. But on the whole, this lens will help you nail those amazing shots with confidence.
