The iPhone 17e comes in two storage configurations:
- 256GB — $599
- 512GB — $799
This is a significant improvement over the iPhone 16e, which started at 128GB for the same $599 price. The base storage has doubled at no additional cost.
What 256GB Can Hold
For most users, 256GB provides ample room for:
- 60,000+ photos (at ~4MB average)
- 40 hours of 4K video
- 50-100 apps including large games
- Thousands of downloaded songs
- Offline content from Netflix, Spotify, etc.
After iOS and system files (~15GB), you'll have roughly 240GB of usable space.
When to Choose 512GB
Consider the $200 upgrade if you:
- Record lots of 4K video (one hour uses ~20GB)
- Download movies and shows for offline viewing
- Play storage-heavy mobile games
- Keep your entire photo library stored locally
- Avoid cloud storage subscriptions
The iCloud Alternative
Instead of paying $200 more upfront, pairing the 256GB model with iCloud+ can be more cost-effective:
| iCloud+ Plan | Monthly Cost | Annual Cost | |--------------|--------------|-------------| | 50GB | $0.99 | $12 | | 200GB | $2.99 | $36 | | 2TB | $10.99 | $132 |
Even the 2TB plan costs less than $200 over a year, and your files stay synced across all Apple devices.
Bottom Line
Most users should start with 256GB and add iCloud if needed. Choose 512GB only if you're certain you'll fill the extra space with local content.
