The Sense Energy Monitor is pretty handy for keeping tabs on your home's electricity usage since it tracks everything in real-time. It's especially useful if you've got a Time-of-Use rate plan. The manufacturer says you can check your energy data through iOS, Android, or web apps whenever you need to. You can even set up custom alerts for important devices.
From what we've found, the Sense Monitor is great for a big-picture view of your energy use, but spotting and identifying each specific appliance might take some time—think weeks to a few months. It tends to recognize big things, like fridges, HVACs, and water heaters, once it figures out your usage patterns.
However, nailing smaller or variable-use devices like computers can be a bit tricky at first. The challenge is mostly because it's learning through some pretty advanced machine learning algorithms.
If you're mostly after an overview of your energy consumption, the Sense Energy Monitor is a solid option. But if you want exact data for each gadget, be prepared for some waiting and tweaking.
According to our research, using smart plugs with certain devices can improve accuracy by giving you direct energy usage readings.
Ultimately, how well it identifies individual appliances will depend on your patience, what devices you've got, and any extra tools you might use with it. For general monitoring, though, it does a good job giving you real-time insights just like the manufacturer claims.
