Setting up heart rate tracking on AirPods Pro 3 is straightforward. Here's everything you need to know.
Requirements
- iPhone running iOS 19 or later
- AirPods Pro 3 with current firmware (updates automatically)
- Fitness app installed
Step 1: Get the Right Ear Tip Fit
Heart rate accuracy depends on good sensor contact with your skin. This is crucial.
- Go to Settings > AirPods
- Select your AirPods
- Run the Ear Tip Fit Test
Pro tip: The best tip size for heart rate tracking may differ from what sounds best for music. When working out, prioritize sensor contact over acoustic perfection.
Step 2: Configure Health Permissions
- Open the Health app
- Tap your profile picture
- Go to Apps > AirPods
- Enable heart rate and workout data permissions
Step 3: Start a Workout
You have several options:
- Fitness app: Open it and tap any workout type
- Siri: Say "Hey Siri, start an outdoor run"
- Apple Watch: If you have one, start from your wrist—both devices will track
What You'll See During Workouts
- Real-time heart rate on your iPhone
- Current heart rate zone
- Calories burned
- Progress toward Move ring goals
Supported Workout Types
AirPods Pro 3 support 50+ workout types including running, walking, hiking, indoor/outdoor cycling, HIIT, functional training, elliptical, rowing, strength training, yoga, and Pilates.
Tips for Best Accuracy
- Seat earbuds firmly but comfortably
- Allow a few seconds for baseline readings at workout start
- Keep earbuds clean—debris interferes with the sensor
- In cold weather, warm up first to improve blood flow
- If accuracy seems off, try adjusting fit or different tip sizes
