Short answer: no. And this confuses a lot of people.
Why No Lossless:
Bluetooth can't transmit lossless audio fast enough. Even when playing Apple Music lossless tracks, your AirPods receive compressed AAC.
How It Works:
| Apple Music Source | What AirPods Get |
|-------------------|------------------|
| Lossless track | AAC conversion |
| Hi-Res Lossless | AAC conversion |
| Standard AAC | AAC (unchanged) |
Does It Matter?
For most people in most situations, no. The difference between high-quality AAC and lossless is subtle, especially while commuting, exercising, or casual listening.
If You Want True Lossless:
- Use wired headphones
- Get a USB-C DAC
- Connect directly to iPhone/iPad
One Exception:
Apple Vision Pro with AirPods Pro 2 (USB-C case) delivers 24-bit/48kHz through a special H2-to-H2 link.
Spatial Audio Is Different:
AirPods Pro 3 fully support Spatial Audio with head tracking. This is positional audio enhancement, not higher resolution. They're separate features.
Bottom Line:
Unless you're a serious audiophile, this shouldn't be a dealbreaker. AAC audio on AirPods Pro 3 sounds excellent for everyday listening.
