Hey! If you're thinking about using the Seagate Exos X22 22TB hard drive in an external enclosure, it can definitely work, but there are a few things you should check first.
First off, about the drive's capacity—when the manufacturer calls it 22TB, they're using the decimal system that's standard in the storage world. So if you see a bit less when you connect it to your computer, like around 20TB, that's totally normal due to the binary system most computers use.
Now, about compatibility with enclosures—this drive uses the SATA 6Gb/s interface. That's pretty common, so it should work with most external enclosures that also support SATA and handle large drives. Just make sure the enclosure fits a 3.5-inch drive, which is the size of the Exos X22.
Also, since this drive operates at 7200 RPM and has a 512MB cache, you'll want an enclosure that meets those power and data specs too. This setup is great for handling big files quickly—just something to keep in mind if that's important for you.
From what we've found in our research, lots of people have had success with this drive in various external enclosures, but they do point out that these enclosures need to be sturdy and have good cooling. High-capacity drives like this one can get warm.
In short, as long as your enclosure is compatible with the size, interface, and power needs of the Seagate Exos X22, you should be good to go for some solid storage and backup use!
