# Give Claude Code live prices with the MCP server

> Add the ShopSavvy MCP server to Claude Code, the prompts that look up products, compare prices and read history, and what each tool call costs.

---

Give Claude Code the ShopSavvy MCP server so it can look up products, compare prices across retailers and read price history while it works. It works without a key; with your Data API key the rate limit is higher and tool calls use your credits.

| Step | Command or prompt | MCP tool | Credits with a key |
|------|-------------------|----------|--------------------|
| Add the server | `claude mcp add --transport http shopsavvy https://api.shopsavvy.com/mcp` | none | 0 |
| Identify a product | "What product is barcode 611247373064?" | `product_lookup` | 1 |
| Compare prices | "Where is it cheapest right now, and when was each price checked?" | `product_offers` | 3 |
| Check the history | "How has its price changed over the last 30 days?" | `product_price_history` | 33 (1 per day plus 3) |
| Check your credits | "How many ShopSavvy credits do I have left this month?" | `api_usage` | 0 |

**Cost:** without a key, tool calls are free and limited to 10 a minute and 100 an hour per IP address. With a key the limit is 100 a minute and each call costs what the matching REST request does (the tool list is in [Available AI Tools](https://shopsavvy.com/data/documentation/mcp-tools)). The four prompts above cost 37 credits with a key.

## Add the server

```bash
# Without a key
claude mcp add --transport http shopsavvy https://api.shopsavvy.com/mcp
# With your Data API key: higher rate limit, calls use your credits
claude mcp add --transport http shopsavvy https://api.shopsavvy.com/mcp \
  --header "Authorization: Bearer $SHOPSAVVY_API_KEY"
# Check that it connected
claude mcp list
```

Then ask in plain language; Claude picks the tools. To see exactly what a tool returns, call the server yourself:

```bash
curl -s https://api.shopsavvy.com/mcp \
  -H 'Content-Type: application/json' -H 'Accept: application/json, text/event-stream' \
  -d '{"jsonrpc":"2.0","id":1,"method":"tools/call","params":{"name":"product_offers","arguments":{"identifier":"611247373064"}}}'
```

Other clients (Cursor, VS Code, Claude Desktop, ChatGPT) are covered in [Claude Desktop Setup](https://shopsavvy.com/data/documentation/mcp-installation).
