The Samsung Galaxy Watch 8 can work without a phone, but functionality depends on whether you have the Bluetooth or LTE model.

## LTE Model (Cellular)

**Works independently:**
- Phone calls (speaker/mic)
- Text messages
- Music streaming (Spotify, YouTube Music)
- GPS navigation
- Gemini AI
- Emergency SOS
- Samsung Pay
- Notifications

**Still requires phone:**
- Initial setup (mandatory)
- ECG/blood pressure (Samsung phone required)
- App installations
- Some third-party apps

**Cellular requirements:**
- eSIM activation with carrier
- Monthly fee (~-15)

## Bluetooth Model

**Works offline:**
- Time, alarms, timers
- Downloaded offline music
- GPS workout tracking
- Heart rate, steps, health monitoring
- Sleep tracking (syncs later)

**Requires phone/internet:**
- All notifications
- Calls and texts
- Gemini AI
- Streaming music
- Weather updates

**Wi-Fi fallback:** When connected to Wi-Fi without phone, can sync data, receive some notifications, and update apps.

## Critical: Setup Requirement

Both models **require an Android phone for initial setup**. Cannot be avoided. LTE model operates independently only after initial configuration.

## Bottom Line

For phone-free operation, get the LTE model with cellular service. Bluetooth model works for fitness tracking offline but loses smart features away from phone.
