The Samsung Galaxy Watch 8 provides useful sleep tracking for monitoring patterns and trends, though it doesn't match clinical-grade precision. For everyday sleep awareness, it performs well.

## What It Tracks

- **Sleep duration** and time asleep
- **Sleep stages** — Light, Deep, REM
- **Sleep consistency** over time
- **Heart rate** patterns overnight
- **Blood oxygen (SpO2)** levels
- **Movement** and disturbances
- **Snoring** (via phone microphone)

## Accuracy Expectations

No smartwatch matches polysomnography (clinical sleep studies), which uses EEG brain monitoring. The Galaxy Watch 8 infers sleep stages from heart rate variability and motion—a fundamentally different approach.

Samsung's BioActive Sensor has clinical validation. Blood oxygen readings correlate within 2% of medical-grade oximeters.

**Best for**: Tracking sleep trends over weeks/months
**Less reliable for**: Precise single-night sleep stage timing

## Sleep Apnea Detection

The FDA-authorized sleep apnea feature:

- Monitors SpO2 across two nights (4+ hours each)
- Available for users 22+
- 82.7% sensitivity, 87.7% specificity
- Screens for moderate-to-severe OSA
- **Requires Samsung phone**

This is a screening tool—not a diagnosis. Consult a doctor if apnea is detected.

## Tips for Better Accuracy

1. Wear the watch snugly (not loose)
2. Keep sensors clean
3. Charge before bed if battery is low
4. Maintain consistent sleep schedule

The Galaxy Watch 8 excels at revealing sleep patterns over time rather than providing absolute accuracy for individual nights.
