Yes, the Samsung Galaxy Watch 8 has FDA-authorized sleep apnea detection—one of the first smartwatches with regulatory approval to identify signs of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).

## How It Works

The BioActive Sensor monitors blood oxygen (SpO2) levels while you sleep, detecting patterns of oxygen desaturation that indicate breathing interruptions. The watch estimates an apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) based on this data.

## Requirements

- **Age**: 22 years or older
- **Sleep**: Minimum 4 hours per night
- **Monitoring**: Two nights within 10 days
- **Phone**: Samsung smartphone required
- **Software**: Wear OS 5.0+, Samsung Health Monitor app

## Clinical Validation

FDA De Novo authorized in February 2024. Clinical study (620 participants):

- **Sensitivity**: 82.7% for moderate-to-severe OSA
- **Specificity**: 87.7%
- Blood oxygen accuracy within 2% of medical-grade oximeters

## Understanding Results

- **"Possible apnea detected"** — Consult a sleep specialist
- **"Nothing detected"** — No moderate-to-severe OSA signs found

## Limitations

- Detects only **moderate-to-severe** OSA (AHI ≥15)
- May miss mild sleep apnea
- Inaccurate with heart/lung/neurological conditions
- Cannot monitor treatment effectiveness
- **Samsung phone required**—not available on other Android devices

## Availability

Approved in 70+ countries including US (FDA), Europe (CE), South Korea, and Brazil.

This is a screening tool, not a diagnosis. If apnea is detected, see a sleep specialist for proper evaluation. Learn more about [sleep tracking watches](https://shopsavvy.com/search?q=sleep+tracking+smartwatch) and their health features.
